As understudy to Dave Richardson, South Africa's wicketkeeper during their early post-apartheid years, Errol Stewart played in five one-day internationals between February 1993 and January 1994, including one as an out-and-out batsman. He was then overlooked for the best part of a decade, before earning an unexpected recall - at the age of 33 - for the visit of Bangladesh in October 2002. But Stewart did not let his period of exile get to him - a qualified pilot and an attorney, he raised a family and became a lynchpin of the Natal sporting scene. In 1995, while playing for the Natal Sharks, he became the first man for 75 years to be a member of a Currie Cup-winning rugby and cricket team in the same year. His rugby-playing days are now behind him - although he now has a lucrative role as a commentator - but prior to his return to international cricket, he demonstrated that he has lost none of his fighting spirit.
