Simpson slams 'wobbly' Aussies Wisden CricInfo staff - October 9, 2002
Australia's one-day side has been criticised as "decidedly wobbly" by their former coach Bob Simpson. Writing in his column in Indian sports magazine Sportstar, Simpson was particularly scathing about the manner of Australia's defeat by Sri Lanka in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy. "All-out attack has been the loudly proclaimed option from the Aussie camp and while they have had some success in the last 12 months, the wheels have been decidedly wobbly," Simpson said. "The shots Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist were out to in the first overs of spin and without even a thought of what the spinners might do were arrogant to the extreme. Most of the other batsmen's dismissals were just as bad. Their frantic shot-making is more often than not pre-determined, and must lead to trouble." Simpson was also critical of Australia's fielding and catching, a situation he blamed on them not working as hard as they might on that aspect of their game. "It has been suggested to me that they are only working at a rate of 70 to 75 percent of what used to be the norm," he said.
