Stemp joins Leicestershire on trial Leicestershire CCC - 3 September 2002
Richard Stemp, who was released by Nottinghamshire at the end of last season, has joined Leicesestershire on trial and is set to play against one of his former clubs Yorkshire this week. The 34-year-old left arm spinner has been playing club cricket this summer but is keen to make a return to the Championship scene. With off-spinner Carl Crowe ruled out because of injury, Leicestershire have offered Stemp the opportunity and he has been named in their squad of 12 for the Championship game starting at Scarborough on Wednesday. Leicestershire coach Phil Whitticase said: "If the wicket looks as though it will assist spin then he has has every chance of playing. It gives us the opportunity of taking a look at him with a view to next season. Richard is keen to make a return to first class cricket and it is not that long ago he was involved in the England set-up." Stemp began his career with Worcestershire in 1990 before moving to Yorkshire in 1993. He was there until 1998 and then joined Nottinghamshire in 1999. Jamie Grove is also included in the 12-man squad in place of Rob Cunliffe. The squad is: Wells(captain), Ward, Sutcliffe, Maddy, Stevens, Wright, Burns(wicket-keeper), DeFreitas, Srinath, Stemp, Malcolm, Grove. © Leicestershire CCC
