Dawn Hasan ignored as PCB names 'A' probables
Khalid H. Khan - 3 September 2002

Test reject Hasan Raza was surprisingly overlooked but controversial pacer Junaid Zia was included when the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) Monday announced 24 probables for a training camp for the forthcoming cricket series against Sri Lanka 'A'.

The Sri Lankan 'A' tourists, who arrive in Pakistan on Sept 14, will play two four-day fixtures and three one-day matches.

Hasan, the youngest debutant in Test history when he played against Zimbabwe at Faisalabad in 1996-97 at the age of 14 years and 227 days, captained Pakistan 'A' to Sri Lanka last year.

Leading by example, Hasan scored two centuries and two fifties in the three-match 'Test' series which Pakistan won 1-0. He made an unbeaten 121 in the first 'Test' at Dambulla and then guided his side to a three-wicket victory with an unconquered 102 in the last game at Galle.

Hasan, who turned 20 in March, had earlier excelled when Pakistan 'A' visited Kenya. He made 87 and 67 in two one-dayers at Mombasa and 124 not out in the four-day match at Nairobi.

The right-handed batsman capped a fine season by scoring 1100 first-class in the national competitions, which included a career-best 257 for Karachi Whites against Rest of Balochistan at Karachi in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy and an unbeaten 201 at Sheikhupura while representing his employers Habib Bank against ADBP in the Patron's Trophy.

Hasan arrived home a couple of days ago after a successful league season in England. Playing for Rank CC in the Birmingham League, he scored almost 1100 in 19 matches.

Junaid has been reported for suspect bowling action on four separate occasions during the ICC Youth World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year.

There are eight Test cricketers named for the camp, scheduled to begin from Friday at Gaddafi Stadium. Batsmen Faisal Iqbal, Taufiq Umar, Salim Elahi, Naved Latif, Imran Farhat together with fast bowlers Mohammad Akram and Mohammad Zahid and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria have all played at the highest level.

The following probables have been asked to report to manager Sultan Rana and coach Aqib Javed at Gaddafi Stadium Thursday:

Naved Latif, Kamran Sajid, Salman Butt, Yasir Hameed, Faisal Iqbal, Najaf Shah, Junaid Zia, Umar Gul, Irfanuddin, Munir Ansari, Taufiq Umar, Imran Farhat, Salim Elahi, Babar Naeem, Bazid Khan, Kamran Akmal, Yasir Arafat, Mohammad Zahid,Mohammad Akram, Abdul Rauf, Danish Kaneria, Asim Kamal, Amin-ur-Rehman and Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan.
