They did not score a run or take a wicket today, but Surrey are the new Frizzell County Championship winners. There were two sides who might have caught them mathematically, but Kent drew with Somerset and Warwickshire had to settle for a draw at Old Trafford and so the champions' pennant will be flying over The Oval next season.

At Old Trafford, Dougie Brown and Dominic Ostler both scored sixties, Neil Carter got to seventy, but when Warwickshire were all out for 328 on a rain-affected day, the captains shook hands and the champagne corks began popping way down south.

Last season's champions, Yorkshire, managed to put the points for a draw towards their survival quest this year when, chasing 345 to win, Leicestershire could only manage 231 for five. Leicestershire's Darrens, Maddy and Stevens, both got to eighty before falling to Steve Kirby.

As always appeared likely, the match at Taunton between Somerset and Kent also ended in a draw. Somerset declared with nine wickets down to set Kent 377 to win. Peter Bowler had gone on to 81 in the Somerset innings while Paul Nixon was 51 not out as Kent went through the motions of chasing such a large total and always seemed intent on avoiding defeat.

With one day remaining, Sussex and Hampshire are unlikely to get anything other than a draw out of their match. Hampshire are still 355 behind Sussex with four six first innings wickets in hand. Jason Laney was top scorer with 89 and three of the Hampshire wickets have fallen to James Kirtley.

In Division Two, Gloucestershire and Derbyshire drew. Derbyshire were, in theory, chasing 583 to win, while there was much more chance of Gloucestershire taking the nine wickets they needed for victory on the final day. They only took four, but Michael Di Venuto was 175 not out at the close.

It is hard to see any other result than a draw from Glamorgan against Worcestershire. With an undefeated hundred from Stephen Peters and Vikram Solanki still there on 83, Worcestershire still trail Glamorgan by 159. There was a half-century for Graeme Hick.

On the second day of a match badly affected by the weather, Nottinghamshire have reached 306 for three against Durham. Usman Afzaal is 91 not out, while Guy Welton scored 77 and Darren Bicknell 54.
