A team of homers? Wisden CricInfo staff - September 8, 2002
India's inability to win a series outside Asia in the last 16 years has landed them with the tag of homers. But this doesn't necessarily apply to their batsmen: of the big four in the middle order, only Sachin Tendulkar averages more at home than he does overseas. And his average outside India – 53.77 – isn't bad either. Most impressive of all is Rahul Dravid, whose century at The Oval was his ninth overseas out of 13 overall. And his average in Tests outside India is comfortably higher than anyone who has played ten innings or more; higher than Tendulkar, who lies in second, and higher than Sunil Gavaskar, who is third. Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman come in eighth and ninth. Dravid's record would be even better but for a miserable series in Australia in 1999-2000, when he made 93 runs in six innings at an average of 15. It is the only blot on an immaculate copybook.
