A soggy end to the summer Wisden CricInfo staff - September 9, 2002
Close England 515 and 114 for 0 (Trescothick 58*, Vaughan 47*) led India 508 by 121 runs - match drawn Even the weather appeared to have seen enough of bat dominating ball. On the first four days early morning rain had given way to clear skies by the time play started. Today, the rain continued to fall and with no wind there was no chance of any respite. The umpires eventually bowed to the inevitable during what would have been the lunch break, though the inevitable had been reached several days earlier after a lacklustre display from England. Rahul Dravid - inevitably - was announced as man of the match, while Michael Vaughan was left unbeaten on his overnight 47, thus denied the chance to go for a record-breaking fifth Test century of the summer. It meant that India's run without a series win outside Asia – 16 years and counting – would go on, but their captain Sourav Ganguly was not an unhappy man. "I thought we batted pretty well throughout this series," he said. "But the bowlers could have performed a bit better but they are young. "We have to become a better bowling unit and learn to take wickets whether it's flat, turning or seaming." We can still improve and we are still searching for that first away win. He identified four main stars for India: "Rahul [Dravid] played fantastically well throughout the series, Zaheer [Khan] bowled very well and Virender Sehwag played well in his first series as an opener. Sanjay Bangar was the great find of the tour. He was very useful in the all-rounder's job."
