A summer of runs
Wisden CricInfo staff - September 9, 2002

A gruelling summer for all concerned, and after seven arduous Tests England have a couple of unlikely head boys. Craig White and Steve Harmison topped their batting and bowling averages for the season, although it probably helped that White only played two Tests and Harmison one. White's 94 not out at Trent Bridge took his average to 153 - that's nearly 12 times his average in Tests in England before this summer (12.85). It must be an Indian thing: White now averages 59.66 against them, more than double his career average. He was also one of six Englishman to average over 50 for the summer, with Marcus Trescothick (93.80) and Michael Vaughan (a round 90) in second and third.

As for Harmison, he was surprisingly the only England bowler to average under 30. The naked eye suggested that Matthew Hoggard had done slightly better than 28 an average of 35.07 - although his 28 wickets were double Andy Caddick, who was in second place - and that Andrew Flintoff had done infinitely better than 11 wickets at 60.81. Statistically speaking, it was a bad summer for Freddie: that pair at Headingley gave him a batting average of just 17.62.
