Blackwell keeps his spot Wisden CricInfo staff - September 28, 2002
Ian Blackwell has been retained in England's one-day squad after taking his opportunity during the ICC Champions Trophy. Blackwell, who was drafted in as a replacement for Andrew Flintoff, smashed 82 off 68 balls in the final group match against India a week ago, and picked up the wicket of Virender Sehwag with his left-arm spin. He is one of seven players selected for the VB Series in Australia. The remainder of the squad will be compiled from the 16-man Test squad. "There is no urgency to select the full one-day squad at this stage," said David Graveney, the chairman of selectors. "And, by not doing so, we are keeping our options open to be able to assess the form and fitness of the Test-match players on tour." Another Champions Trophy replacement, Owais Shah, is also named, along with Paul Collingwood and Craig White, subject to fitness. "Clearly there have been recent injury concerns over Craig White and Paul Collingwood," said Graveney, "and all players' fitness will be monitored nearer the time as normal." Ronnie Irani, Nick Knight and Jeremy Snape complete the set, all of whom played in Sri Lanka. The tournament begins on December 13.
