SCOTLAND crushed Italy by 131 runs at the Rubber Research Institute in Kuala Lumpur yesterday to enhance their chances of qualifying from Group D in the ICC Trophy.

Iain Philip top-scored with 71 in a total of 273 all out. Scotland dismissed the Italians for 142, a much-needed improvement to their run-rate. Scotland must beat Bermuda in their final match today to finish top of their group and eliminate their opponents. If they lose, there will be a three-way tie involving Hong Kong, with run-rate deciding which two go through.

The Scots, given an excellent start by Philip and Bryn Lockie, who added 127, failed to ram home their advantage. Lockie was first to go, for 58 off 63 balls. After Philip had departed for 71, only George Salmond, the Scotland captain, dominated the bowling with 43 in 42 balls.

Off-spinner Ian Beven opened the bowling for Scotland and finished with four for 20.
