Date-stamped : 25 Sep94 - 18:34 WC87 Group B: Pakistan v England, 12-13 October 1987 The Pakistani batsmen always looked as if they were going to de- stroy the English bowling, but the Eng. bowlers never allowed them to. A score of 239 was not formidable on this easy paced wkt, and with Imran off the field during Eng's batting due to food poisoning, Eng had a good chance to win this match. But they had not taken into account Miandad's shrewed captaincy and Pak- istan's unquenched thirst for victory at home. England was heavily dependant on its top 5 batsmen. But they all took time in settling down, and once they did, no one went on to make a big score. By the time Gooch, Broad and Robinson were back in the pavilion the score was 3/141 and they had consumed 33.4 overs. Qadir and then Akram and Jaffar put the skids on the mid- dle and latter order batsmen. The most important wkt was that of Lamb's, since he had been the one to give Eng victory over WI. After that, Eng crumbled. Gatting had marshalled his bowling resources adroitly till the final few overs. Strangely, he asked Emburey to bowl the last over. He had miscalculated, and his front-line batsmen had com- pleted their quotas. Qadir hit him for a six and a four, and Yusuf joined in so that the off-spinner ended up giving away 15 in his last over. These runs made a difference in the ultimate analysis. A team that had shown such great resilence against the Windies only 4 days back, now panicked and crumbled against a team that was inspired dspite the loss of its captain.
