Slightly slower in pace than his earlier days, McDermott is nonetheless capable of destructive spells, and proved to be a higher wicket-taker in last summer`s Ashes series than Warne. A right-handed tail-ender, McDermott usually bats with the subtletly of a round-house swinging drunk, and can score quickly at the end of an innings during the odd times he connects. However, Test innings against West Indies and South Africa also point to a greater resolution beneath the bravado. McDermott has been struck down by freak injuries in recent years (a twisted bowel in England in 1993 and a broken ankle in the recent West Indies tour). A moody character, McDermott can become grumpy and withdrawn if he is not dominating the opposing batsman, and TV cameras suggest that he is less than subtle in his sledging. Captain Taylor will do well to ensure that McDermott sticks to his role as `veteran bowling enforcer` in the World Cup.help@cricinfo.com |
