Strangely, Slater has been unable to transfer his aggressive, heavy scoring Test form to the one-day arena; an average in the mid-20s and strike rate of only 50 suggest considerable under- achievment in this area, and the reason for the dichotomy is elusive. Currently he is fighting to hold on to his place in the one day side. Despite his undoubted skills, questions have been raised about the right-hander`s temperament; he appears to lack the patience to grind out a good score against a superior attack, and this has led to his seeming inability to prosper consistently against bowlers like Wasim Akram, Ambrose and Walsh, who have exploited his resulting lack of confidence. Captain Taylor has gone on record as saying that he finds Slater`s almost compulsive aggres- sion exasperating at times.help@cricinfo.com |
