In the last three years has been a particularly heavy scorer, after establishing himself in the middle-order. A medium pacer with an extremely good slower ball in the closing stages of an innings, Steve initially was a one-day cricket hero, and it took until the 1989 Ashes tour to finally establish a niche for himself in the Test team, and to become a regular century scorer in the longer form of the game. Steve`s batting is of a more accumulative nature than Mark, but he possess several delightful shots in his armory, his trademark being the backfoot smash through cover with a firm flick of his wrists. Initially suspect against pace, constant battery from the world`s fastest bowlers has forged an awkward though effective defense against the rising ball, and this culminated in his epic innings of 200 against the West Indies in the cauldron of Sabina Park, sharing in a record partnership with Mark. Steve`s apparenet dourness on field makes an interesting contrast to the relaxed mien of twin Mark - the two are not said to be as close as one would assume twins to be. Unfortunately, Steve Waugh has been niggled by injury during this season, and has been forced to limit his bowling, which has been considerably more than handy to Australia over the years. Almost unthinkable six months ago, including Steve Waugh in the squad for a tough World Cup campaign might be now construed as not without risk, but the experience he lends would be invaluabale.help@cricinfo.com |
