1996 World Cup Profile:

Fanie DeVilliers epitomizes the spirit of South African cricket a real fighter, DeVilliers initially could not make the South African test side and was only thought of as a one-day bowler. He quickly dispelled this stereotype when given a Test place on the tour of Australia in 1993-94, bowling brilliantly in South Africa`s thrilling Test win at Sydney. In one-day cricket he is a miser with the ball. When Australia toured South Africa in 1994, DeVilliers conceded only one run of the 49th over in the one-day international at the Wanderers by bowling six perfect yorkers. DeVilliers has the ability to bowl away swingers, and along with his ability to move the ball off the pitch on occasions, make him a lethal bowler, whether it be with the new ball or a slightly older one. He is also a useful lower order batsman.
