1996 World Cup Profile:

Since his entry into international cricket as a replacement on the Australian tour (1993-94), Gary Kirsten has established himself as one of South Africa`s leading batsmen. During that tour he got his maiden one-day hundred (112*) at the MCG against Australia. He had to wait until the end of 1995 however, before he registered his first Test hundred (110) against England. Kirsten has often struggled in test cricket to convert his fifties into hundreds. He is however, a very reliable opener who does not often let his country down. He is a fine timer of the ball and possesses strokes all round the wicket, especially favouring the square cut, pull and glance. He is also one of South Africa`s best fielders, be it in the covers or under the helmet at forward short leg.
