1996 World Cup Profile:

Shaun Pollock played his first ODI for South Africa at Newlands in Jaunuary 1996 against England. In that match he rescued a failing South African batting line-up by scoring 66 runs off 66 balls, at the same time taking 4 wickets for 34 runs, and earning himself the amn of the match award. During the remaining 5 One Day Internationals, Pollock took another 9 wickets, scored another 30 runs batting from the no 8 position, and won another man of the match award as well as the man of the series. His total bowling figures for the tournament and thus his ODI career are 65.1overs 8 maidens 212 runs 13 wickets 3.25 economy rate. For this reason he has been heralded by both the English and South African press as "the find of the tour". He too is a fast/medium bowler who opens the bowling and is able to do a lot of damage to a batting attack. He gets sufficient movement from the pitch to cause nightmares for even the best batsmen, and his usefulness with the bat helps to extend the South African batting order right down to the lower order. As a fielder he is also no slouch and therefore a very valuable addition to the South African squad.
