1996 World Cup Profile:

Widely reknowned and often remembered for his dour and dogged determination, Asanka Gurusinha has proven to be as important to Sri Lanka's One Day XI as he is to their Test team. The highly-experienced left hand batsman has made the problematic number 3 position his own. He lends to the team a solidity which is essential against a framework of dashing stroke players, but to suggest that he is a 'strokeless wonder' as some have done is to do him a grave injustice. His fluent driving on both sides of the wicket is particularly notable, and once set he rarely fails to provide Sri Lanka with a solid foundation, which he often builds upon himself. Gurusinha is also a more than useful medium pace swing bowler, and given the right conditions his crafty in-dippers are not easy for opposing batsmen to handle.
