1996 World Cup Profile:

At 32, the senior most member of Sri Lanka's World Cup squad, this stockily built left hand batsman will be the cornerstone of any success Sri Lanka are to have, both as captain, most experienced player, and as the mainstay of the middle order. Despite his relative inability to scamper the quick single which is considered essential in one-day cricket, Ranatunga surprises most observers with his ability to keep the scoreboard ticking over using deft placement on both sides of the wicket, combined with fluent driving through the offside in particular, to earn his runs. Also a deceptive and useful medium pace bowler, his contribution could be deterministic as far as Sri Lanka's cause is concerned.
