1996 World Cup Profile:

Chaminda Vaas has in many ways been the chief architect of Sri Lanka's upsurge in Test and one-day cricket of late. His incisive left arm pace bowling, which has invited comparisons with Wasim Akram, albeit somewhat prematurely, has given the attack the extra bite it had been missing previously. The first Sri Lankan to take 10 wickets in a Test match, and at 20 still the youngster in the team, Vaas clearly has much to give to the future of Sri Lankan and world cricket. For the moment though, he would be satisfied with a few typically hostile and destructive spells during the World Cup.
