Player of the Month
December 1996: Venkatesh Prasad
December 1996 saw a number of notable efforts by pace
bowlers in Test cricket around the world. Lance Klusener's stunning debut
in Calcutta, Glenn McGrath's matchwinning labours in Sydney, and Curtly Ambrose's
heroic comeback from near-ridicule in Melbourne are just three of the outstanding
achievements in December.
However, our pick is a bowler whose best performance came on a losing side.
Not just any losing side, as his batsmen let him down to the tune of 100 all
out in the first innings and 66 all out in the second. But that wasn't his
fault as he took 5 for 60 and 5 for 94. From the moment of his Test debut
at Edgbaston just six months ago he has been the model of consistency for India,
and has finished 1996 as the leading wicket taker in Test cricket for this
calendar year (37 wickets in 8 Tests at 22.68). In one-day internationals
he was the fifth leading wicket-taker of the year (45 wickets in 30 ODI's)
and was as much a matchwinner in India's only one-dayer this month (the
Mohinder Amarnath benefit in Mumbai) as centurion Tendulkar. With partner
Srinath he looks like forming one of India's greatest new-ball pairings ever.
the googler's Player of the Month for December 1996 is Karnataka
and India's Bapu Krishnarao Venkatesh Prasad.
Highlights of Prasad's December:
10 for 154 against
South Africa at Durban, December 26 to 28;
4 for 27 against
South Africa in the one-dayer, December 14.

I think Prasad's success is also the success of srinath.

I am from the West Indies. It is great to see that a fast bowler from India can perform so great at the highest level of the game.
We in the caribbean look forward to seeing Mr. Prasad alongside Mr. Srinath as India tours our land later this year.
I hope that they perform as well as they can, for we would not like to see yet another Indian Side bereft of quality fast bowling
just as we are at spin. Salute to the Great Kapil Dev for being the only great Indian Fast Bowler ever.

There is no doubt that V.Prasad is the most intelligent fast bowler of recent times.
He plays his cricket in his mind which is important for any cricketer. After he got
Amir Sohail's wicket in the World Cup Quarter Final he has never looked back. I would
personally like to thank Amir for his stupid aggression. One thing Paki's lack is
sportsmanship. Sohail clearly justified my statement. And since that day Prasad has
constatly improved while Sohail must start thinking of retirement as his scores have
been nothing less than pathetic. What a contrast. Thanks Sohail you have given
India a great fast bowler.

forget the moment when he removed aamir's 'DANDA' in the world
cup quarter final with the same weapon. That came on very
appropriate occasion. I would like to congratulate Venky on

Venkatesh Prasad has become an indispensible weapon in India's arsenal. If
batsmen fear the hostile pace of Srinath, they are in no way taking it easy
against Prasad. He has a very deceiving method to deliver the ball. Over the
past 2 years he has developed into a mature medium-fast bowler and has also learnt
the art of delivering the slow ball. His down to earth attitude towards the game
will surely lead him to achieve greater heights in world cricket. I join

I think the success of Prasad would help Srinath a lot. Since the
retirement of kapil and Prabhakar, Srinath has been trying to establish
himself as the number one pacer. With Prasad breathing down his neck,
he would be striving hard to reatin that position. Pace bowlers give
a lot of importance to who takes the new ball. This is very good for India.
We hope their good qualities rub off on Johnson and Ganesh.

time since we had two genuine opening bowlers in the Indian side. India was
lacking a bowler all this while after the exit of Kapil. It is good to see the
performance of Venkatesh Prasad. But I would like Prasad to work also on his
incoming balls. He is very effective with his outgoing balls. But if he has the
talent to bring the ball in the same way as he moves it out, I am sure he will
be one of the best bowlers in the near future.

I strongly feel that India should start laying good pitches which plays even for 5 days and helps develop fast bowlers. If expertise is require they must seek help of Australia/ West Indies. Infact diet / food is also important in developing consistant fast bowlers as also their mental stability. Congrats to V.Prasad and let him know that there are well wishers all over the world

I first saw Venkatesh Prasad in Sharjah in 1994 and he made
no impression on me whatsoever. It seemed to me that he was in
the Indian side because of his connections. Right upto the World
Cup Match against Pakistan I had no respect whatsoever for Prasad's
ability and it baffled me no end why the Indian selectors kept
picking him. After India got its runs and Pakistan was off to a
rollicking start with Saeed and Sohail both blasting Srinath and
Prasad to the tune of 113 runs in 15 overs, the latter did something
that endeared him to me in a manner I had never imagined possible.
Prasad started the 16th over and the first ball he bowled was short of
a length and Sohail slashed him the cover point boundary and arrogantly
pointed in the same direction as if to tell him that he would hit him
to the the same point on the boundary once again. Prasad calmly nodded
and went back to his marker and ran in once again and let loose a well
disguised slower one which Sohail. while attempting the same shot,
played at too early, tried to check his stroke, and played on. That
was brilliant. Prasad had outwitted and outfoxed the Pakistani captain.
As a Pakistan Fan I was shocked and stunned and dazed but at that
moment I knew I had seen the start of a great chapter in Indian
cricket. Since then Prasad has gone from strength to strength and
he has has rewarded the faith the Indian selectors put in him.

Boycott may be stingy in praising the non English bowlers but Parsad is infact
a wonderful bowler right from his good performence in world cup and almost
everywhere after that.He may be among the most clever bowlers also. Those
bowlers who don't use the brain they should learn from parsad.
Itis amazing to see that how he has compensated his slow speed with swing and
clever deliveries.
I wish him success(beside Pakistan) against every team.

From: Nadeem A. Khan (nmohamme@engr.udayton.edu)
December's Player of the Month BKV Prasad is India's best bowler on any surface. This claim could not have been made with confidence until his 10 wicket yield at Durban, a supreme effort, notable also for being the first by an Indian in 10 years(overseas). Having come under fire from Geoffrey Boycott, who expressed surprise that international batsmen fell for him with such regularity, and from Lillee for various reasons, Prasad's rise has been meteoric and he has done more than most to deserve the India cap.
It has been a long year and that wicket of Aamir Sohail in the World Cup quarter-final, following a boundary and the inevitable heap of rubbish from the acting Pakistan captain, may not be fresh in every memory, but among a swag of subsequent wickets few have brought an Indian greater satisfaction. You could have knocked Sohail down with a feather after being bowled next ball by a slower one from Prasad. Asked in a recent interview about the exact nature of the mid-pitch discussion, Venkatesh said, "It was friendly talk. I just thought of getting him out."
It is questionable if the talks were matey, but there is little doubt that Prasad thinks steadily--a lot more than his partner Srinath--varying his pace on a batting track and making it difficult for shots to be played smoothly or mingling the trademark leg cutters with deliveries that come in with the arm. Kirsten's dismissal and then Richardson's in the first innings of the disastrous Durban Test were gems among the doom and gloom, wickets earned more through crafty planning than wayward aggression, bringing to mind some of Terry Alderman's dismissals.
He spends a lot of time with his Karnataka neighbors, Srinath and Johnson, and unlike most cricketers, the trio can often be overheard unraveling the mysteries of their profession, reverse swing being a recent focus. Johnson has been an underachiever, lacking confidence more than any other quality, and will do himself no harm to devote sufficient time learning from Prasad.
Like his compatriots, BKV is not the complaining sort. He shrugs philosophically at the Indian wickets, "Some things will never change. You just have to work harder. We did some good things recently (against South Africa)." It is an understatement. Few fast bowlers from his team have made as perceptible a dent in home conditions. His greatest contribution, apart from the consistent multiple wicket hauls, is the inspiration he is providing millions of young bowlers in India. For the first time since Kapil Dev an Indian pace bowler has notched up world class results, at home as well.
In the meantime, Prasad is concentrating on gaining the respect of the South Africans, no easy task in a country that produces fast bowlers by the cartload. He has drawn his share of criticism but if he keeps on performing this way, even Boycott will have to tender an apology. Now that is impossible.

I think Prasad is a wonderful bowler. His biggest asset is that he thinks a lot
on the field unlike most of India's pace bowlers. He mixes is deliveries pretty
well and keeps the batsman guessing all the time. He has really good slower
ball although he tends to use it a bit too frequently at times. Prasad's leg
cutters are the greatest. I don't think I'll ever forget the Aamir Sohail
dismissal in World Cup 96 quarter finals. I think Prasad will go places.

Prasad along with Srinath is probably the best thing that has happened to Indian cricket after Kapil's retirement. What has impressed me most about him,is his ability to learn from his mistakes and adapt quickly to any class of cricket. He has metamorphosed into a thinking bowler and is probably one of the most lethal in the one day situation, his slow leg cutter being his trump card. He has risen to the ocassion in the test matches as well , as exemplified by his figures. His run up and delivery are as silken as can be , ensuring that he does not waste energy at any point in his bowling action, a quality which will enhance his endurance at the international level. Keep it up Venky!

It's great to watch the progress of Venkatesh Prasad in the Indian team.
Even though, he is performing well in the one-dayers since last couple
of years his entry to test cricket is only in 1996. His three time 5
wicket taking feat this year in less than seven tests is a very good index that we
are to see yet another superstar in Indian cricket. Great News for
India!!!
