AV: You came from a family that had a rich tradition in cricket. Your grandfather Victor Richardson captained Australia in Tests and your brothers Ian and Trevor played Test cricket for Australia as well. How much did that help in getting your mindset focussed on cricket? GC: The whole environment as youngsters was sport oriented. Cricket was the primary game, but we also played baseball. Ian was in fact picked to play baseball for Australia before he was picked to play cricket. The fact that our grandfather captained Australia in Tests meant that cricket was in our genes, but our father was always the motivating factor. From a very young age he coached us and got one of his friends to coach us and the whole environment we lived in was very much a sporting environment. When I look back on it, we weren't trained for much else and it isn't a surprise that sport and cricket played such a big part in our lives. |
