Player of the Month
May 1997: Sanath Jayasuriya
What you had to say!

Message from sidestep@interact.net.au (Jules Mann)
People who are bagging Jaya should remember, you don't have to be the best player in the world to be the player of the month. It just means he was chosen because he performed the best during May. No one else really stood out except Saeed Anwar but that was only one innings (albeit a great one). My alternative vote would go to Tim Saisell from Canberra who smacked 38 of 12 balls in indoor cricket men's B grade. He tells me it was a class act despite being on a flat track facing an under arm bowler...

Pretty fair call...I like Sanath's style of play and it should only get better.
Maybe the series in the Windies will be an acid test...

What a good choice. Congratulations Sanath!!! With his current form nobody can even get close to him. It is sheer talent. It is sad to see some catagorise him as a slogger. What a load of rubbish. Even though he hits in the air one has to have talent to place it where there are no feilders.
I wonder why great batsmen around the world are trying to imitate him but could not succeed. Are they following a slogger? This will answer all the critics.
He has the talent as well as the courage to find the hidden pages of the One Day International Book.
Keep up the good work, Sana!!
All the best for you and the team, for the Windies tour.

I think Jaysuriya deserves this award, because of him Sri Lanka is able to post such
large scores against Pakistan in the Finals. Some people might say that his is a slogger
but he also some play some intelligent cricket like he does in his innings of
151* against India.

Jayasuriya is one of the best opening batsmen in the present time. He is not a slogger, but he
plays with style and and intellect. I am an Indian cricket fan and was very sad when India lost
it's two Independence matches to Sri Lanka and Pakistan but it was fun
watching some great batting from batsmen like Jayasuriya and S. Anwar. I am sure
that the highest run record which was not broken for 12 years will be broken sooner if this two batsmen are around.

Message from kasra@mansol.com.au (Ramesh Kasilingam)
To those Jayasuriya bashers, your comments lack logic. He is not a slogger ! He has a test average of 36 which is higher than his one-day average. Ofcourse he is no Lara or Tendulkar, but nobody is saying he is. He is undoubtedly the most explosive and most feared batsman in one-day world cricket today. His 151 not out came in 120 balls and he was there at the end when the winning run was scored in the 41st over. That is, he batted 26 overs without the field restrictions and was able to get a huge score. He is capable of smashing fast bowlers and spinners alike and has the capacity to demoralise and humiliate a bowling side. He is a big reason behind Sri Lanka's one-day successes. Those who say anyone can play one-day cricket are from countries who are not good at it.

Well done Sanath. You deserve all accolades for redifining one day cricket. Keep batting the way you do. Worry not what the pundits say! Let them think of new rules to stop you.
What you are demonstrating is that text book coaching is no substitute for raw talent and innovation. You will succeed in test cricket as well. Lets hope you bat through the 50 overs one of these days. Then the double hundred will be yours.
Let the purists argue about the batsman ship of Lara and Sachin. You are not one of them. You are unique. So keep playing the way you Know best.

Saeed was a bit stiff - and he averages over 40 in the one day game, which is a

much better bat at all forms of the game, Jayasewerage is just a slogger, Saeed
can adapt his game

playing countries, how should one play in one day cricket, but to be frank he is not
a stylish left hand batsmen, he just swing his bat,he swings his bat as though
he is hitting them over long on, but the ball is in third man,so i dont see any
talent in him, tell him to be more stylish, it is really good to watch left handers
playing, but it is better to listen to the radio commentary when jayasurya plays.

Sanath is one of the most explosive players I have ever seen. On his day he can make even the best bowling look very ordinary. According to me he and Saeed Anwar are the best opening batsmen in the open era.The best thing about Sanath is that he rarely hits the ball hard; most of his shots are played with sheer timing.

Jaya was easily the most deserving of the award . Although Saed Anwar played that epic innings , he did not do much afterwards did he ?? I suspect that those who call Jaya a slogger, who makes his runs on small grounds and dead batting pitches have never seen him in action. What about the 140 he made in South Africa ? He does hit the ball very hard and over the top, initially, but that's to make full use of what is on offer. Unlike Afridi he moves his feet around superbly so that he's in the ideal position to attack, and combines this with great eye-hand coordination. His greatness is exemplified by Wisden honouring him as one of 5 international cricketers of the year: The first person ever, who has won this award without playing in England that year; i.e. for his ODI achievements. That Wisden, been quite a conservative body, chose to honour him is ample testament to the radical approach he has brought to ODI cricket. He deserves far more credit, and will no doubt go in history as a legend
(in odi's at least)

Jayasuriya certainly deserves this award. He is a damn good batsman
in the subcontinent pitches. His strokes are so powerfull that once he
gets going, the bowlers can only pray for him to make a mistake.
Lets see how he plays in the West Indian, Australian and South African
pitches and then probabaly we can start comparing him against
Sachin, Lara, Anwar and Waugh.

Undoubtedly, he has changed the facet of the one day game.
Gone are the days when a score of 250+ was considered a good defending total.
These days only a score of 300+ can hold a team like Sri Lanka.
Jayasuriya sets the pace for this kind of an attack.
He has revolutionalized the approach to the one day game.
I wish him goodluck and hope that he has a bright future ahead.

I agree that Jayasuriya has prove that he can score more runs than more balls be plays. I like to watch him when he's playing but I wouldn't compare with others best player like Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara , Mark and Steve Waugh. Nine out of Ten times he hits the ball into the air while batsmen like Sachin, Lara etc. hit most of their shots into the around. I think that what makes different form world class batsmen to batsmen who try to score on every single ball.

i dont think so that jayasuria should have been awarded
as the player of the month because he did not break any records
on the other hand SAEED ANWAR should have been awarded player of the month
because he scored 194 and broke the 12 yearrecord seconed the biggest
achivements is that after being out of cricket for 6 months he came back
and if you are a cricket critic than you should know that being out of touch
it is more difficult to score
So in my view you made a wrong deceision and the player of the month
should have been awarded to SAEED ANWAR

I must admit, I was never a cricket fan until the Wills World Cup '96, but since then I have followed the Sri Lankan team in any tournament that they participate in. I am biassed, being a Sri Lankan, but one must admit, they are at the moment a team that is to be dealt with. Note, I did not use the word unbeatable, as that is not an accurate discription. As for Sanath Jayasuriya, he is definetly NOT a slogger but a very good bat and stylish bat at that too!! Shaheed Afridi is a slogger and plays village green cricket, a definite disgrace to the game of cricket.
Thank you for giving the opportunity to voice my views. Keep up the good work. :)

There may several opinions against this decision of Sanath Jayasuriya chosen as player of the month.
I am an Indian with a great love for India and would have liked to see such an performance by an Indian and
particularly from Sachin.
But I must admit that Jayasuriya is the greatest player in the shorter version of the game.
Fluke can work twice or may be thrice but not a dozen times. Starting from World cup
1996 he won at least 10 matches on his own. Just how many others could do recently.
It is always that in such type of strokeplay one gets chances, but it applies to even
those who makes fifties, hundreds at much lower pace.
So there is no doubt about his greatness.
Talking of notebook type cricket has no meaning at least in
todays ODI.
Jayasuria, keep it up

I was fortunate enough to watch that great innings aginst India at the Wankhede
Stadium in the Independence cup. I think the highlight of the innings was the ease
with which Jayasuriya was despatching the ball to the empty spaces in the field.
The Indian fielding side was completely at is mercy and Sachin had not option
but to change the field after every ball.
Even though I am a hardcore fan of the India team, and I had gone to the ground
hoping for an Indian victory, I consider myself very fortunate that I got a chance

These words define Sanath Jayasurya... Explosive,Innovative and Exciting to
watch. Sanath probably became a household name after the World Cup where he
was instrumental in this great victory for the Sri lankans. I guess a lot of
credit goes to Arjuna for having confidence in this player to open. A risk that
paid off high dividends. Jayasurya opposes all laws of orthodox cricket when it
comes to oppening an innings but leaves viewers awed at the brutality with which
he destroys dare I say "attacking bowlers". A classic example of sheer talent
from the sub-continent which has produced cricketers of unparalleled ability.

Jayasuriya the player of the month... that is totally RIDICULOUS. The guy is an uncultured slogger who only manages scores on small grounds. He is utterly useless on proper sized pitches. His performannces have to be put in perspective. He is a good slogger but does not have the class or finesse of great batsmen like Tendulkar, Lara or Waugh. He reduces the game of cricket to an agricultural exercise, and I doubt he will ever improve on his pathetic test average!

I think Sanath Jayasuriya is a bit overrated. His best (and perhaps) only performances have come on sub continent pitches, which make even a mediocre batsmean look great. Let him perform consistently and in the same manner on English and Australian wickets. Same goes for Aravinda de Silva. Compare his record in NZ and against a docile NZ attack and his record in SL immediately afterwards.

Sanath Jayasuriya deserves the PLAYER OF THE MONTH award more than any

one who lead the charge for SriLanka's recent victories, most notable
being the World Cup victory and the Independence cup Victory. He is a
flamboyant batsman and although people think he is a slogger, he
judges the ball before he hits it over the top. To sum up, he is

Jayasuriya has brought revolution in one day cricket. I
would say the batsmen are given more favours in oneday cricket
now and this affects the game, since luck plays a major part in
the rash hitting.
The restriction on the number of players in the outer circle
in the first 15 overs should be relaxed. At least 3-4 fielders
should be allowed in the outer circle. Jayasuriya has taken
wonderful advantage of the restrictions. Still he is a very
good player.

Sanath Jayasuriya is among the top batsmen in world cricket today. His selection as the player of the month i think was a close call, especially after some fine performances by other players during the Independence Cup (namely Saeed Anwar and Aravinda de Silva). Still, i think the choice of Jayasuriya was a right one. The guy is unstoppable when he's blazing away. I'm sure his fellow countrymen are very proud of what he has accomplished for the world cup holders since their triumph in the World Cup last March. All Sri Lankans are extreamly proud of you and you showed the world the

and never try to be a test batsman. Test batsmen are outdated since they are
lethargic and nobody likes to watch them batting. You should try to be

no doubt! jayasurya is the deserving player of the month!
this new technique followed by Srilanka, i.e hitting in the first 15 overs
when only 2 fielders are allowed near the boundry line, is certainly
appreciable and jayasurya has been doing really well in these first fifteen overs.
Hitting in the first 15 overs also demoralises the opposite team's
when one sees a run rate of 8 in the 10 overs ofcourse would try to get tense and give some loose balls
which would not happen if the batting team is not hitting like mad!
jayasurya deserves this credit as being an opening batsman he has
been really supporting his team till mid 30 overs.
Hats off to him!

Sanath is from Southern Sri Lanka where they find it hard to bare the cost of cricket gear compared to Colombo . Sanath had the talent but still wasted many of his chances to prove it.But now he is in good form. All Sri Lankans love him making him the most popular person last year.More Jayasuriyas can be found under palm gardens of the country and I wish good luck to all of them.

Well, what I think is that he doesn't know how to play cricket. He just strikes
away his bat, and luckily gets a four and a six. The good players are who know how
to place the ball and not just come forward and hit every ball. I would say the
Saeed Anwar's 194 was far better than his 151*.
