Shaun Udal Benefit 2002

Hampshire stars shine for Shaun

Hampshire beneficiary Shaun Udal took a strong Hampshire team to Eversley for the annual county match against the village side on Friday, June 28. It included five players with Test match experience and two - including Shaun - who have played One-Day Internationals.

There was an early shock as Hampshire lost a wicket in the first over when Alan Mullally - batting eleven places higher than his customary position in the order - had a stump uprooted by Patrick Parkin's fourth ball.

The next 12 overs saw a sparkling stand of 125 between Neil Johnson and Derek Kenway. Johnson laced his innings with trademark off-drives as he struck ten boundaries before being caught behind the wicket.

Kenway scored at will with shots all round the wicket as he shared in a second century stand with John Crawley, Hampshire's latest Test player who made a typically cultured fifty which he reached with consecutive sixes.

After Kenway was caught in the deep going for his hundred, Robin Smith demonstrated his power with a robust 59. The current county captain was joined at the wicket by former skipper Mark Nicholas, playing his first game for two years because of his packed summer schedule as presenter of Channel 4's cricket coverage.

Mark survived long enough to show that he can still wield the bat as well as the microphone, and after a brief appearance at the wicket by Shaun Udal, who hit a massive six, the county declared in the 34th over with 326 on the board.

When Eversley batted it was the Hampshire coach, Jimmy Cook, who gave a demonstration of controlled bowling to do the early damage as he captured four wickets in five overs. This left the lower order with the opportunity to indulge in some big hitting before ultimately succumbing still 126 runs short of Hampshire's total.

After the match, Shaun Udal received his reward for bringing such an excellent side to the village when Eversley president Michael Slater presented him with a cheque for £3,000. An auction among the 250 guests in the hospitality marquee raised more than £3,000, while a raffle, collection and donations brought the beneficiary's total on the day to more than £9,000.

Organising committee chairman Andrew Renshaw said: "It was a fantastic day with excellent weather, and a good crowd enjoyed watching the Test and county stars in action.

"Everyone was very generous and we were delighted that Shaun reaped the benefits of his popularity."
