Day/night match - Sussex v Kent at Hove
Sussex 262 for 2 (45 overs) Kent 213 (42.3 overs)

Kent have lost their first ever game under floodlights - defeated at Hove by 49 runs. Despite being 180 for 3 at one stage plus two large partnerships, Kent's batsmen were unable to keep up with the 5.84 an over they needed and wickets tumbled towards the end of the innings. David Fulton top scored with 77 and Alan Wells (whose career has included 17 seasons with Sussex) made 50 including a six and 4 fours.

Earlier Kent lost both their opening batsmen quickly - Ed Smith was caught behind for 18 and Trevor Ward was bowled for 8. Chris Adams was the pick of the bowlers; his spell included two quick wickets near the end of the Kent innings as Will House was lbw for 9 and Martin McCague was bowled for 4. Captain Matthew Fleming scored 5 and Julian Thompson was the last man out, bowled with 2 and a half overs to spare.

The game began at 3.30pm with the home side winning the toss and batting. Sussex made a formidable 262 for 2 from their 45 overs and new overseas signing, Michael Divenuto of Tasmania, made 116 in an opening partnership of 200. Richard Montgomerie, the other Sussex opener (formerly of Northants), also scored a century, dismissed for 110 in the last over of the innings. Ford and Fleming took one wicket apiece.

Kent have just one National League game under floodlights this season - against Gloucestershire at Bristol in August. A big crowd travelled to Hove (for which there was free entry) to witness Thursday's match - Sussex supporters will see 4 day/night games in the National League this season. New Kent captain Matthew Fleming is the only player in the side with experience of this type of cricket at 'professional' level. Speaking on BBC Radio Kent earlier in the week, opener Trevor Ward said that the team were generally looking forward to the match:

"The only thing that worries us is how cold its going to be when the sun goes down.... but we're looking forward to it. I just hope the weather's kind to us."

Kent fielded a young side - with five/six players who could easily force their way into the side not on the field at Hove today. Dean Headley and Robert Key were rested from the team after their recent international exploits, along with Mark Ealham who takes part in next week's one-day tournament with England, India and Pakistan in Sharjah.

Kent have a further 5 practice games at Canterbury next week. Full coverage on CricInfo.
