Kent Cricket News ----------------------------- www.kent.cricket.org ---------- Sun 23 Aug 1998 KENT V WORCESTERSHIRE, COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DAY 4 OF 4, ST.LAWRENCE GROUND, CANTERBURY Worcestershire 360 all out and 333 for 8 decl. Kent 344 all out and 270 for 9 - Match Drawn Kent achieved the seemingly impossible yesterday as their lower order batsmen managed to survive the final overs of Canterbury nearly 100 runs adrift of victory and with just one wicket left. Min Patel was the star performer finishing with 55 not out; he and Ben Phillips, who made 54, transformed Kent from a position of 127 for 7 when it looked as if the game would be over by 4pm, to 270 for 9 at the close. At six o'clock just when in seemed that the the game had finished - for an unknown reason another over was bowled. Earlier in the day Worcestershire declared their second innings at 333 for 8; having lost two batsmen in the morning session. Steve Rhodes was trapped lbw by Dean Headley five short of a century; and Richard Illingworth for run out for six minutes later. That set Kent the hugely improbable target of 350 from 86 overs; and the task of batting all day. At lunch they were 46-2, much depending on Carl Hooper, 14 not out at that point, who had made over 150 in the first innings. He however fell for 33 mid-afternoon, Kent and England all-rounder Matthew Fleming making the same score before being caught behind. Kent's innings was steadied with a 51 run partnership between Phillips and Headley (out for 20) for the 8th wicket, and Phillips and Patel putting on 66 for the ninth, before the former was bowled by Moody for 54. Moody finished the pick of the bowlers taking 4 for 63, Bobby Chapman also took 3 wickets. This salvaged draw will be a big confidence boost for Kent; who the previous day had been in a commanding position and had a strong chance of victory. The county will now play a AXA League match with Worcestershire on Sunday afternoon. ----------------------------------------------- INFORMATION FOR SPECTATORS (AXA League Game) KENT V WORCESTERSHIRE, CANTERBURY, 23RD AUGUST Play from 2.00pm to 7.00pm (gates open 10am) Entrance: £10 adults, £5 concs, £10 car-park 40 overs a side, Tea 4.30 to 4.50 Weather Forecast: Cloudy.
