Kent Cricket News ------------------------------------------------- http://www.kent.cricket.org ----------------------- Sat 20 Feb 1999 Youth Development News - 160 youngsters enjoy Seeboard Super Eights Kent Cricket Board's annual Seeboard coaching scheme for county primary schools reached a spectacular climax as 160 youngsters took part in the indoor super eights festival at the University of Kent in Canterbury. They were selected from 7,500 children who were originally introduced to cricket by development coaches at 200 schools in the summer. Sixteen teams took part, split into East and West Kent groups. Maidstone Interceptors defeated Ashford Attackers in the East final, with Maidstone Strikers third and Swale Sweepers fourth. In the West section the winners were Bromley Backswings, with Sevenoaks Stumpers runners-up, Sevenoaks Seamers third and London Leg-Breaks fourth. Champagne award winners were 10-year-olds Sam Leggis (Smarden) and Michael Bailey (Kemsing) and 11-year-olds Robbie Card (Mereworth) and Edmund Birkhamshaw (Beckenham). Shepherd Neame are the sponsors of the Kent Youth Cricket Festival for 1999, which will see an expansion of the highly-successful Tunbridge Wells Festival for Under-16 teams. The generous sponsorship will cover the cost of ground hire, cricket balls, umpires and trophies. At present eight teams compete in the Tunbridge Wells festival at The Nevill Ground in August, but this year there are to be three other festivals - Mid Kent (to be held at The Mote and Ashford CC), Metropolitan (CUACO) and Easter Kent (University of Kent at Canterbury). It is hoped to attract a further 24 teams, eight in each group. Players must be under 16 on August 31 and full details and entry forms are available from Kent Cricket Development Officer David Sear at the KCB office in Canterbury (email david.sear.kent@ecb.co.uk) Kent Cricket Board, in partnership with the Kent Association of Cricket Coaches, are organising two Child Protection Workshops. The first was at the Ames Levett Centre at Canterbury on February 1 and places are available at the second, to be held at Kent Sports Development Unit at West Malling on Monday, March 1 (7pm) at a cost of £5. The workshops' aim is to raise awareness of child protection in a practical and non-alarmist way and will involve key issues such as child abuse and the response to it, good coaching practice, minimising the likelihood of wrongful accusations and promoting positive relationships with children. The organisers point out the distressing fact hat sport has been used to disguise child abuse and stress that the issue cannot be ignored.
