Kent Cricket News ------------------------------------------------- http://www.kent.cricket.org ----------------------- Sat 02 Jan 1999 Australia v England, 5th Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground Dean Headley took four wickets for England in Sydney on Saturday; a day just as dramatic as last Tuesday in Melbourne. At the close Australia were 322 all out, but they lost their last 5 wickets for just 3 runs after Darren Gough took the first Test hat-trick of 1999 - and became the first Englishman to perform the feat against Australia for 107 years. England began the day by losing the toss for the fifth time in the series; and had to make several team changes following the news that Mike Atherton was unable to play due to a recurrence of his back injury. Australia chose to bat and Headley was responsible for the first two wickets to fall, those of Taylor and Slater when the score was 4 and 52 respectively. But an 190 run 4th wicket-partnership between the Waugh brothers threatened to ruin the positive start England had made, until Mark Waugh was caught behind off Headley for 121 (6 for 319) and the collapse began.
