Australia were all out for 184 earlier in the day; an outstanding performance by Slater who scored 123 of those runs despite only one other Australian batsman making double figures. Kent's Dean Headley took 4 for 40, including the crucial (if perhaps too late) wicket of Slater who was caught behind with the score 180 for 8. Peter Such was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5 for 81. England began their second innings need 287 for victory. By close of play they were 104 for 2, Mark Butcher and Alec Stewart the batsmen out, making 27 and 42 respectively. Australia took two stumpings and there was a wicket apiece for Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill. Kent's Mark Ealham scored 24 not out in England's innings of 238 for 6 from 38 overs (the match was delayed by rain). The academy could only reach 170 for 7 from their 38 overs in reply, two wickets apiece for Croft and Giles, Ealham finishing with figures of 7-1-32-0.
