Kent Cricket News ----------------------------- www.kent.cricket.org ---------- Sun 06 Sep 1998 SURREY V KENT, SUNDAY LEAGUE, THE OVAL Surrey won by 41 runs (Surrey 4pts, Kent 0pts) SURREY 183 for 8 (40 overs) Batty 38*, A Hollioake 32, Ratcliffe 24 Philips 2-30, McCague 2-35, Fleming 2-43 KENT 142 all out (33.3 overs) Smith 31, Hooper 26 A Hollioake 4-18, Bell 3-36 A disappointing defeat for Kent in their penultimate Sunday League game of the season, losing to a side who had won only one other game in the 1998 competition and were languishing at the bottom of the table. Surrey scored at a fairly steady rate and despite losing wickets, a quickfire 50-run 6th wicket between Hollioake and Batty helped to build their innings of 183 for 8, with three wickets apiece for Phillips, McCague and Fleming. Kent however were unable to build any real partnerships, the only real entertainment coming from three sixes, two of them hit by Hooper and one by McCague. In the end, with Kent needing 41 runs from 7 overs, Ben Phillips was disasterously run out after he and Headley ended up at the same end. In the match, 9 batsmen were bowled. Surrey, as one of the major exponents of day/night style cricket, play music as each batsmen comes to the crease (selections ranging from "Soul Man" for Carl Hooper, "Welcome to the House of Fun" for Matthew Fleming, and most bizarrely, "The Bare Necessities" for Dean Headley). In addition they have named their team The Surrey Lions and chosen a man wearing a lion's head as a mascot. It is ironic that with all these marketing strategies Surrey have slumped to bottom of the Axa League table this year. ----------------------------------------------- Kent's next home game: v Somerset, Canterbury, County Championship Wed 9, Thu 10, Fri 11 and Sat 12 September Play starts 10.30am with gates opening 9am Lunch 12.45pm to 1.25 (last day 12.30 to 1.10) Tea (usually) 3.40 to 4.00 (last day 3.10-3.40) Close of play 6pm (last day 5.30) Half hourly reports on BBC Radio Kent.
