Andover Cricket Club - Formed 1863
Andover Review 2002 (written by Roger Miller)
If only Andover could have stuck to playing 50-over cricket! On June 1, after winning four of
their opening five limited-over matches, Andover were flying high, top of the log for the first
time ever.
South Wilts, Calmore Sports, Liphook & Ripsley and Burridge had all been beaten, the solitary
early season defeat coming after a pulsating, weather affected affair against Havant. Come the
all-day 'time' games, and it all turned a tad sour.
Injuries and unavailabilities caused inevitable problems, with key players absent, particularly
Toby Radford, who was sidelined for six weeks after breaking his wrist in an HCB match. Only one
win (over Bashley-Rydal) was achieved in the longer format, with the team suffering five defeats
in the eight matches.
But opportunities were given to numerous promising youngsters to cut their teeth in Premier
cricket, among them Rob Atkins, Cille van der Merwe, Rob Palmer and Steve Williams, lads who
will undoubtedly form Andover's future.
Individually, skipper Roger Miller scored 573 runs, while younger brother Mark (272) and Ian
Langdown (241) would have been more prolific but for work commitments. Richard Taylor snapped
up 28 wickets, with spin duo Gareth Tate and Matt Hooper also featuring in the overall SPL1
bowling averages.
