Portsmouth Cricket Club - Formed ????
Portsmouth CC Review 2002 (Written by Lee Savident)
Our inaugural season in SPL1 came at a transitional time for the club and, perhaps surprisingly,
we were slightly more successful in the 'time' format of the game. We suffered only one
'all-day' defeat (at BAT Sports), finishing fourth in the 'time' pennant, compared with ninth
in the 50-over log.
Weddings and unavailabilities certainly took their toll on what was a relatively small squad of
players, but the absence of senior players gave opportunities to blood some of the younger
element. Visiting Havant on day one was an awesome starting point; yet we could and probably
should have won, wresting defeat from the jaws of victory so to speak. It took us a while to
recover from that defeat and it wasn't until we visited South Wilts in late May that we
registered our first 50-over win. The longer form of the game produced some better performances -
our high-scoring drawn match with Bournemouth being particularly enjoyable - but were tailed
away again at the end of the season, finishing just below midway in the overall log.
Former Hampshire duo Matt Keech and Lee Savident each notched over 300 runs, with South African
all-rounder Warren Swan hitting 275 before making a premature return to Johannesburg. Only
retiring captain Raj Maru and Savident featured in the bowling averages.
