Alton Cricket Club - Formed 1869
Potted history
Alton Cricket Club was formed in about 1869. Not a lot is known about the
early history of the club. The club have played at three ground in the
town; initially at what is now the Bass Sports Ground, then at Anstey Park
and since 1985 at Jubilee Playing Fields.
Alton won the Hampshire Cricket League Division 1 in 1978 and finished as
Runners-up in 1979. Alton were invited to the Southern League in 1980 and
although never to set the Southern League alight remained in the league
until relegation in 1991.
A period of rebuilding followed and after finishing fourth in 1997 managed
to win promotion back to the Southern League this season by finishing as
Runners-up in 1998. Gary Chalkley will again be captain supported by
vice-captain Matt Ireson. Chris (Tossa) Torrisi, fresh from successive
County Division 1 batting awards will relish the challenge as will veteran
Paddy Heffernan.
