Alton Cricket Club - Formed 1869
Alton CC Review of the season 2001 (written by Julian Ballinger)
Last season will be one to be forgotten by most at Alton. Many felt very confident that the club
could bounce back from relegation and finish in one of the promotion spots and an immediate
return to SPL2. Alas, it was not to be as a great start petered out into a tame mid-season and a
positively awful August.
There were a few bright spots including a sparkling 114 not out by Bruce Oliphant (at Flamingo)
and an incredible spell of 7-19 by skipper Julian Ballinger against Waterlooville. The fielding
of the Alton players has been and will continue to be outstanding.
The emergence of Mark Heffernan as a genuine wicket-keeper/batsman looks good for the future but
there is a lot of hard work to do, particularly in the batting department, if Alton wish to push
for promotion in 2002.
Only evergreen Paddy Heffernan (359) featured in the divisional batting averages.
Ongoing ground and pavilion improvements will make playing at Alton an even more pleasant
experience during the coming seasons.
