Leckford CC Review 2000

2001 promised to be a great year for Leckford, an optimism that was "allegedly" shared by their peers on the Premier League Web Site! Alas, a season that promised so much in the end delivered very little. In fact it seemed that relegation was on the cards for much of the year, with Miles Bulpitt unable to field a settled side in his final year at the helm.

Fortunately, the team spirit of previous years returned in the final quarter of the season to save the village side any blushes. This culminated in a 92 run victory at Purbrook, which was by far and away the most impressive performance of the season.

The total of five victories could easily have been more had it not been for rain during an undefeated spell in July and August, which also saw nail biting one-wicket victories over fellow strugglers Waterlooville and Bashley (Rydal) II.

Mike Howard (509) and Aussie import Glenn Richmond (419) were the undoubted stars with the bat, with Richmond recording the only century of the year, an unbeaten 134 against Lymington. Spinners Nigel Marriott and Andy Cattle won the bowling plaudits with 20 and 17 wickets, respectively.

With the SPL becoming ever stronger, consistency will be high on the agenda for Leckford's new report writing captain in 2002.
