Winchester K.S. Cricket Club - Formed 1994

Back to Winchester K.S. CC Directory Page

Potted history

Hyde Ramblers Cricket Club were formed in 1929 by Bill Ricquier and his four brothers. As the name implies it was formed from a Ramblers club, based in Hyde, which played occasional games of evening cricket. This gradually evolved to weekend games as the playing strength increased. After playing all the top sides in the area, Hyde Ramblers applied to join the Southern League in 1971 season and in their first season finished a creditable third.

In 1973 Hyde Ramblers and Winchester City merged to form Hyde Ramblers (Winchester). 1979 saw Hyde Ramblers celebrating their Golden Jubilee with a cricket week and a celebration dinner. In 1980 Hyde Ramblers changed its name to Winchester (formerly Hyde Ramblers) C.C. to reflect its standing as the premier cricket club in the city at that time. In 1983 Winchester and Southampton Cavaliers merged and after an exodus of key players in 1991, the club was forced to blood several young players which formed the basis for future prosperity. In 1994 a merger with Botley-Simmarians led to the formation of Winchester Cricket Club Krakatoa Simmarians (formerly Hyde Ramblers).

On the playing front, Winchester has always been respected as one of the stronger sides in the Southern League culminating with championships in 1988 and spectacularly in 1995 remaining undefeated all season. Well known for their limited over exploits they won the Echo Trophy in 1987 and been beaten in the final on four occasions. In local cricket the club was a founder member of the W.D.C.C.A. and has dominated the Tichborne Trophy competition, winning on no less than 22 occasions. They have won the Condor Cup on six occasions but it is probably on the indoor scene that they have made the greatest impact.

All those who were there at Lord's in 1996 when they became National Indoor Champions will never forget it and they so nearly repeated the dose in 1997 narrowly losing to Pudsey in another exciting final. After their win at Lords, they were invited to represent England in the European Winter Cup which they won with a record score in the final. Winchester have won the H.C.A. championship on six occasions. They have won the Farleys South Hampshire Indoor Cricket League for the last nine years, ten in total and the Hammonds Jewellers Senior Cup for the last six years, seven in total, recording the Treble for the last four years. Over the last nine years Winchester have played some 140 indoor games and only lost six. They have also won the Division One title in the Listerine League at Winchester's River Park on five occasions. It is this side who won the earlier H.C.A. titles.
