Winchester K.S. Cricket Club - Formed 1994
Winchester K.S. CC Review 2001
Winchester KS were fortunate that after their demotion - the River Park club fell foul of the
SPL's youth cricket criteria - most of the players remained loyal. The side was strengthened
with the return of Chris Knight and later by Rhys Oxley, the promising Hampshire YCs off-spinner
from nearby Fair Oak.
The fixture list meant that we had to play all the teams that finished 2000 in the lower half of
the final table first and it was not until the latter part of the campaign that the more testing
fixtures arrived. What looked like a testing run in proved to be in the end very comfortable
with the only reverse coming in a rain affected match against Rowledge.
Winchester's all round strength proved too much for many of the sides and even the loss of pace
bowler Dave Greetham (shoulder injury) did not check the side's progress. No one person stood
out as four of the batsmen scored over 300 runs - Raj Naik (520), Paul Marks (472) Jim Taylor
(337) and Dave Parsons (311).
The wickets were shared between Stu Marks (24), Martin Taylor (20), Raj Naik (18) and Jim Taylor
(15). The irrepressible Nigel Bungay claimed 20 victims behind the sticks.
Plans for a new pavilion at River Park are now well advanced and a new Colts set up is now in
place as WKS renew their SPL2 rivalries this summer.
