Sparsholt Cricket Club - Formed 1935
Sparsholt CC Review 2002 (written by Ollie Kelly)
A strong start to the season (4 wins in 5 games) and crucial victories late in the season over
United Services and Rowledge, both by the narrow margain of one run, ensured Sparsholt a
creditable 5th place finish.
The turning point of the season was a harrowing loss to Old Tauntonians & Romsey, inspired by an
unbeaten Charles Forward double century, from this point on relegation from a constant threat.
However, Sparsholt did achieve success in winning the Hampshire region of the National Village
Championships, eventually losing to SPL2 rivals Rowledge, who won the Berkshire/Surrey group.
Tim Richings was the outstanding performer with 460 runs at an average of 38, including a crucial
120 against Rowledge. Kevin Foyle (228 runs at 46), Ian Stuart (221 runs at 37) and Oliver Kelly
(318 runs at 22) also featured prominently with the bat.
Andrew Lang's return to Sparsholt colours significantly improved the bowling attack. Both Lang
and Ian Ellis finished the season with 22 wickets, and were ably supported by Mike Ball
(18 wickets).
Yet again Sparsholt employed a "squad rotation policy" employing a total of 29 different players
throughout the season, narrowly beating last seasons total of 28.
There was success too for the Second XI, who achieved promotion for the first time, finishing
runners-up in HL West 1. Thanks must also go to Bill Gunyon for his excellent preparation of the
playing services.
