Who holds the record for the slowest 99 in Tests? (11 February 2002)
To be out for 99 is an agonising experience for any batsman. It
becomes even more so when a direct hit finds him inches short of
completing the magical 100th run after almost 500 minutes of ceaseless
vigil against his fiercest opponents. ML Jaisimha, though, was too graceful a cricketer to let
the hurt show. His departure from the batting crease was as immaculate
as his arrival.
The Hyderabad stylist, whom the great Sunil Gavaskar, among others,
idolised, notched up the dubious honour of compiling the slowest 99 in
the second Test of India's 1960-61 home series against Pakistan. India
were replying after the visitors had ground their way to 335. Opening
the innings, Jaisimha batted well into the fourth day before being
dismissed. By then, the Test was meandering to a dull draw.
Jaisimha, though, was no dour batsman. A technician of the highest
order, Jaisimha usually aimed for the innings beautiful. No wonder
then that at least two of India's most beautiful batsmen, Mohammad
Azharuddin and VVS Laxman, happened to be among his pupils. He was
also one of the finest cricketing minds of his times and definitely,
the finest captain India never had.
