Who holds the record for bowling the most number of overs in a first-class match? (29 November 2002)

Being CK Nayudu's brother and still making a name for oneself was in itself a difficult task. But to CS Nayudu's credit he went one better, claiming a world-record that has now stood for over 57 years. By sending down 152.5 overs (917 balls) in the 1944-45 Ranji Trophy final between Holkar and Bombay, played at Bombay from 4-8 March, 1945, the then 31 year old leg-spinner claimed the record for bowling the most number of overs in a first-class match. In the Mumbai first innings of 462, Nayudu sent down 64.5 overs while returning figures of 6-153.

After Holkar were dismissed for 360 in reply, Bombay went on to pile the agony in the second innings. With Russi Modi (151), Vijay Merchant (278) and RS Cooper (104) all scoring tons and Bombay scoring 764 all out, the younger Nayudu as his side's premier bowler was once again asked to put his nose to the grindstone. He carried out his task unflinchingly claiming 5-275 in 88 overs. Even his marathon feat and a dazzling unbeaten 249 from England great Dennis Compton, who was making a guest appearance for Holkar, however, failed to prevent their side's defeat in what was at that point the highest scoring match ever.
