Which team won an ODI even though no batsman made double figures and all 11 batted? (06 July 2001)
The West Indies tour of South Africa in 1998/99 was not especially
memorable, if you were a West Indian that is. The visitors were
thumped 5-0 in the Test series and only narrowly avoided a similar
fate in the ODIs which they lost 6-1. Their only moment of glory
came in the second ODI at Buffalo Park in East London. After losing
the toss and being put in, none of the West Indies batsmen - all 11
of whom batted - made double figures. And yet they won the game by
a handsome 43 runs. If that's baffling enough, more so is the fact
that West Indies actually totalled 292/9 in their 50 overs.
Just how could that happen? Simple, two batsmen made triple figures
and the other nine single digits. Shivnarine Chanderpaul slammed 150
in 136 balls and Carl Hooper produced 108 of his own, the duo adding 226
for the fourth wicket. The next highest was wicket keeper Ridley Jacobs
with 8. Shaun Pollock grabbed 6/35 including the big wicket
of skipper Brian Lara who laboured over 26 balls for 3 before
being caught by Jonty Rhodes at point. The only double digit number
in the West Indies batting card belonged to Extras with 13. In
reply, South Africa were bowled out for 249 with 19 balls to spare.
