When India scored her first test victory overseas? (07th May 2001)
India's record in Test cricket in the period 1932-68 was pretty mediocre.
At home at least, the team registered some notable
triumphs - a victory over a formidable Australian side
at Kanpur in 1959, their first ever rubber triumph against England
in 1961-62, defeating New Zealand in both the series in 1955-56
and nine years later, defeating Pakistan in the 1952-53 for their
first ever rubber triumph. Overseas however India's record was
abysmal. In the period under review, India had played 42 Tests
in England, Australia, West Indies and Pakistan and had not even
won one. The ten victories India had registered till then had all
been in home matches.
India finally broke her cricketing duck abroad against New Zealand
at Carisbrook, Dunedin on February 20, 1968. It was the first Test
of a four Test series and keeping in mind New Zealand's weakness
and India's generally good record against them, it was on the
cards that India would finally register their first win abroad
during the series. And India did not waste any time in recording
a historic moment in their cricket history when the team, led by
Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi completed a five wicket victory soon
after lunch on the final day.
