Two Indians have hit a century and taken five wickets in an innings in
a Test match (16th May 2001)
A century and five wickets in an innings in a Test match is a rare
feat and has been performed only 25 times in 1544 games. Only two
Indians are among the select band to have achieved the feat and in
both cases, Vinoo Mankad and Polly Umrigar found themselves on the
losing side despite their heroics.
Mankad's double was at Lord's in 1952. It was the second Test of the
series, with India already one down. Mankad who was not in the
original squad following a misunderstanding with the selectors, was
drafted into the side for the second Test while playing English league
cricket. He opened the innings and immediately made his presence felt
by top scoring with a breezy 72 in India's inadequate total of 235.
When England batted, Mankad sent down 73 overs and took five for 196.
England ultimately amassed 537. In the second innings, Mankad scored a
dazzling 184 and was third out at 270 following a third wicket
partnership of 211 runs with Vijay Hazare. But India could get no more
than 378 and England hit off the requisite runs for the loss of two
wickets to complete their victory early on the fifth morning.
Umrigar emulated Mankad's feat, ten years later at Port of Spain. It
was the fourth Test of the series, with West Indies already having
clinched the rubber by winning the first three Tests. West Indies,
batting first, scored 444 for nine declared and Umrigar bowled 56
overs to bag five wickets for 107. India were shot out for 197 in
reply with Umrigar, playing in his penultimate Test, top scoring with
56. Following on 247 runs behind, India were all out for 422, thanks
in the main to Umrigar's blazing unbeaten 172 who scored his runs out
of 230 in 248 minutes. West Indies needing 176 runs for victory, reached
their target for the loss of three wickets shortly before tea on the fifth
day.
