DID U KNOW...

Which Indian hit a century and took ten wickets in a first class match on the Zimbabwe tour of 1998? (23rd May 2001)

Touring Zimbabwe in 1998/99, India played a three day warm-up against the ZCU President's XI at the Sunrise Sports Club in Harare, the maiden first class game staged at that venue. Riding on a stunning tour de force by one man, the Indians comfortably closed out an innings and 71 run victory. The ZCU President's XI, composed of eight present or future internationals, won the toss and chose to take first strike. They ran into an inspired Anil Kumble who snapped up 5/35 in 24.4 overs on a slow paced wicket to trundle the hosts out for 156. Douglas Marillier, Neil Johnson, skipper Trevor Penney, Bryan Strang and Everton Matambanadzo were his victims.

The visitors piled on the agony, collecting 400/5 before closing shop half an hour before tea on the second day. Ajay Jadeja, Sachin Tendulkar and Nayan Mongia all made fifties but they were upstaged by Kumble who smacked an unbeaten 100 from just 131 balls. The ZCU side lost half their side before stumps on the same evening, only one scalp accruing to Kumble in Trevor Madondo. But on the final morning the wily leg spinner polished off the tail, closing with figures of 5/18 and taking his match haul to 10/53. With a century and ten wickets, Kumble could hardly have chosen a better way to warm up for the Test following three days later at the Harare Sports Club. His heroics with the bat earned Kumble swift promotion to No.3 as night watchman in India's first innings where he made a dogged 29. Kumble also grabbed seven wickets with the ball but could not prevent India hurtling to a 61-run defeat.
