Which Indian has scored the most successive test fifties (30 May 2001)

In Zimbabwe's series against Bangladesh last month, Andy Flower equalled a long-standing Test record by cracking his seventh fifty in successive innings. Going into the series, Flower had made 65 against New Zealand, 183 not out, 70, 55 and 232 not out against India, and 79 against New Zealand. In the first Test at Bulawayo, Flower collected 73 against Bangladesh to lift the tally to seven and go level with Barbadian legend Everton Weekes. Indeed Weekes had also taken heavy toll of India, against whom six of his seven fifties were produced. Flower however failed to go one better when he was run out for 23 in the second Test at Harare.

For India two men have got six fifties in consecutive Test innings. Gundappa Viswanath was the first and remarkably all six of his knocks were on away soil. Vishy got five fifties in Australia in 1977/78 and followed it up with an effort of 145 in Faislabad. Fellow Karnataka batsman, Rahul Dravid emulated GRV by running up six 50s in a row in the 1997/98 home season, three against Sri Lanka and three against Australia. As India go into the Test series against Zimbabwe, VVS Laxman has four successive half centuries to his name, gathered during the Kolkata and Chennai Tests against Australia. Can he mount an assault on the record?
