DID U KNOW...

Which batsman has hit the most number of sixes in an over in Test cricket?
(24 September 2001)

Before we give the name, let us reconstruct the scene, as it is the stuff the finest cricketing romances are made of.

It was Lord's, July 1990 and the first Test in a three Test-series between India and England. Azharuddin, leading his country for the fourth time in Tests, after prior discussion with his senior players, decided to put the English in. It was a decision he was to regret.

The home team piled on the runs after their captain Graham Gooch was dropped early in his innings by Kiran More. Gooch made 333, Allan Lamb 139 and Robin Smith 100 as England declared after putting up a monumental 653 for four. Hundreds from Ravi Shastri and Azhar saw India reach 430 for nine. When last man, Narendra Hirwani walked in, India needed 24 to make England bat again.

Kapil Dev on 53 was facing Eddie Hemmings, the 41-year-old English off-spinner. Kapil tapped the first two deliveries defensively before swinging each of the next four beyond the boundary. India had averted the follow-on in the most glorious fashion. The next over saw last man Hirwani dismissed for no score.

A fourth innings collapse by the Indians though saw them losing the Test by 247 runs despite Kapil's heroics.
