If ever South Africa had to win a game in this World Cup, it was this
one against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead in Durban. After having lost to
West Indies and New Zealand, the host nation was on the verge of being
knocked out off the competition. So, with everything to play for in
the day/night fixture, South Africa lost the toss, and Sri Lanka
decided to bat first. Not an auspicious start for South Africa, as no
team had ever chased successfully under lights in this World Cup thus
far. South Africa perhaps made a big mistake by dropping Allan Donald,
and brining in the inexperienced rookie Zondeki. The pressure caught
up with an unusually circumspect Jayasuriya (16), run out in the ninth
over.
