The Indian bowlers strove hard to defend the modest total once play resumed in the afternoon. Javagal Srinath showed the way, claiming the first Netherlands wicket with just the fourth ball of the opening over. It was also his 300th wicket in ODIs, making him the fifth bowler after Pakistan's Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan and India's own Anil Kumble to achieve the feat. He would add a further three wickets to his tally by the end of the match.
