Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1927/28

Captain: Charles Ridgway

Again, Rhodesia were deeply indebted to Transvaal for sending another team up to the country. This was managed and captained by Algy Frames, who did much to support Rhodesian cricket. Again, several leading players did not come, but Test players Bruce Mitchell, Jack Christy and Dalton Conyngham all made the trip, as did Louis Duffus, more well-known for his writings.

Rhodesia included a 17-year-old schoolboy, Jack Hayward, probably the country's most talented player before the Second World War. He was a superb left-handed batsman, top scorer on his debut, and many thought that only lack of opportunity prevented him from playing Test cricket for South Africa. One who did was Denis Tomlinson, batsman and leg-spinner, who toured England in 1935. Arnold Hyde, also a good amateur boxer, was another useful all-rounder and brilliant fielder making his debut. `Ken' Austin, who played in the second match, is believed to be the oldest surviving Rhodesian cricketer.

Transvaal narrowly won the first match against the Rhodesian team after being 98 behind on first innings, but applied themselves fully in the second match, overwhelming Rhodesia by an innings.

At Raylton, Bulawayo; 31 March, 1, 2 April. RHODESIA 303 (G E Fletcher 31, C J R Hayward 72, J C Campbell-Rodger 47, E C Arnold 57; F A Walsh 4/62) and 184 (G E Fletcher 51, W Wood 60*; S W Brissenden 4/38, J A J Christy 3/13). TRANSVAAL 205 (A B Kennedy 32, J A J Christy 40, B Mitchell 54; E F Dollar 4/46, A Hyde 3/34) and 287/7 (A C Langebrink 68, J A J Christy 103, B Mitchell 45*). Transvaal won by three wickets.

At Salisbury Sports Club; 7, 8, 9 April. TRANSVAAL 423 (R A Farquharson 40, J A J Christy 175, D P Conyngham 63, L G Duffus 47*; D S Tomlinson 4/105). RHODESIA 135 (B Mitchell 3/13) and 129 (R N Tomlinson 44*; H H Campbell 3/38). Transvaal won by an innings and 159 runs.

It is intended in the future to include full scorecards and much more information on cricket in Rhodesia during this season. At present, the next entry in this section is for 1929/30
