Issue 14, February 16, 2001 Letters ZIMBABWE CRICKET LOSES CELEBRITY! Melbourne paper The Age remarks "Zimbabwe...struggled in Australia this summer after losing star players Murray Goodwin and Neil Armstrong". Now THAT would bring in the crowds, although he's a bit long in the tooth - but wasn't it golf he played on the moon? That aside, I have just had a great time following the team around New Zealand and Australia. If they can get it together to bat, bowl and field to their best ability in the same match, the world should be their oyster. The last match against Australia was a joy to watch. Marion Pitman (England) MESSAGE TO THE ZIMBABWE TEAM To the team of Zimbabwe cricketers, g'day! How are you? As you would be able to guess from your recent tour in Australia, I'm an Aussie! Well, I have been watching the Carlton series all summer and I really loved watching you guys play as well as Australia (of course!). I was watching the Carlton series last Sunday which was your last game against Australia. I thought it was excellent and truthfully as much as I'm a patriot I thought you guys should have won! You deserved it! It was very suspenseful and in the beginning I didn't think it was possible for you all, but towards the end I thought you would've won easily! I wished you guys would have gotten into the finals against us because that was something I would have loved to watch! Well, Alistair Campbell and Heath Streak, you were both voted on the list for "Man of the Series", but unfortunately neither of you won. Even worse, none of the Australians won! Brian Lara did, which I thought was pathetic! We got him ducked out in the second finals! Well, Douglas Marillier, you did a 'cheeky' move when you came into bat! We have never seen anyone bat to the side or the back before! It was excellent though! Now there are people trying to 'copy' your moves during the Carlton series finals! It's not as good as your original moves, I can assure you of that! But here in Australia we named it after you! It's the 'Dougie Marillier'! Pretty good for someone who hasn't batted all summer, though! Funny, isn't it? To the rest of the Zimbabwe team, I hope you guys all do well for the rest of this season! I hope you win more matches because I think you guys are really good and have the potential to win. I think if you had the same batting order similar like your last game you could win a lot of victories! Anyway, I hope you can play Australia again so I can watch you guys! Sandra Lin (Australia) THE VIGNE CUP I understand that the Vigne Cup is different to the national league, but I was just wondering what those differences are? James McMaster (Australia) Reply: The Vigne Cup is a competition for Mashonaland clubs only (essentially Harare), while the national league is countrywide.
